Hyde named new varsity girls basketball coach at SL

Rich Hyde has made the round of coaching at the lower levels at Spring Lake. On Monday, Hyde was given his chance to prove himself at the varsity level. Hyde, who has served as the Lakers' junior varsity boys basketball coach the past seven years, was named the head varsity girls coach at Spring Lake during the district's Monday night board meeting. Hyde is a math teacher and a counselor at Spring Lake Middle School. He and his wife, Angela, have two daughters: Julie, 7, and Anna, 5.

“This is my 14th year here and I’ve been involved in the basketball program all 14 years,” said Hyde, who started out as a volunteer assistant at the eighth grade level, then was hired as the freshman girls coach the following year. He has a total of 10 years coaching experience with both the boys and girls programs.

“I would have been happy as the junior varsity (boys) coach the next 25 years, working with (varsity coach) Bill (Core), but when this opportunity came up, I talked to my wife about it and she was pretty excited. We told (my daughters) Sunday night when we were talking about it at the dinner table and they were both very excited.”

Hyde takes over for Jim Warren, who coached the Lakers’ girls for 10 years before leaving to take over as varsity boys coach at Fruitport Calvary Christian last month.
