College Showcase: Addison runs to Big Ten title

Grand Haven High School graduate Becca Addison had a fantastic indoor track and field season for the University of Michigan, and she's continued that success as the sport moved outdoors. Addison, who won a pair of Big Ten conference championships over the winter months, added another Big Ten title this past weekend. The U-M sophomore took first place in the 1,500-meter run at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, held in Iowa City, Iowa. Addison won the event in a time of 4 minutes, 26.59 seconds. It was the lone win for Michigan at the event.

“We just had an average day. No one really stepped up other than Becca (Addison), Jill (Smith), Erin (Pendleton) and Julian (Purvis),” Michigan coach James Henry said. “Those four were the athletes who performed well and stepped on the gas.”

Addison placed runner-up in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:06.68. Iowa’s Bethany Praska won the event in 2:05.63.
At Grand Haven, Addison set school records in both cross country and track. As a senior, she won the 800-meter run state title and placed third in the 1,600 run. She won both of those events as a junior.

In cross country, Addison placed third in the state as a senior, helping Grand Haven place second in the state in back-to-back seasons.

GH GRADS WIN ULTIMATE FRISBEE TITLE

A trio of Grand Haven graduates helped the Michigan State University’s Ultimate (Frisbee) team capture first place in the Chicago Invitational Ultimate Frisbee Tournament earlier this spring.

Zach Albright, Ryan Morstadt and Brad Morstadt are each juniors at Michigan State and 2008 GHHS graduates.

A total of 30 teams from around the country battled it out at the Naperville Polo Grounds. Teams from Michigan, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Calvin College and Hope College also competed in the event.

Michigan State defeated St. Louis, 12-3; topped Truman State, 13-7; and knocked off Case Western Reserve, 13-7. Michigan State went on to defeat Minnesota-Duluth, 13-7

In the championship bracket playoffs, MSU defeated Olivet Nazarene, 13-6; St. John’s, 12-10; and Dayton, 13-7. Michigan State defeated Ball State in the championship game, 13-8.
