SL baseball not content with split at R-P

Spring Lake's offense wasn't a problem against non-conference foe Reeths-Puffer on Wednesday, but head coach Brian Sabo was frustrated with too many errors and some base-running gaffs that might have cost the Lakers a sweep of the Rockets. Instead, the Lakers (9-9 overall) settled for a split, dropping the opener, 5-2, then rebounding in Game 2 with a 9-6 win.

Spring Lake tallied a combined 22 hits during the doubleheader, but four errors in Game 1, plus some base running mistakes that potentially cost the Lakers a big inning, cancelled out their success at the plate.

“We still need to put a complete game together,” Sabo said. “Hopefully, we’ll learn from these mistakes.”
Sophomore Adam Clauss pitched a complete game for the Lakers, and allowed six hits. He struck out one and walked one.

Noah Ellingboe led the Lakers with two hits, including a double, while Ryan Walling had an RBI double and Michael Zietlow added an RBI groundout.

The Lakers sweated out a win in the nightcap, as they committed two errors in the bottom of the seventh that allowed the Rockets to tighten the score. But junior pitcher Brian Chappell escaped with the victory for the Lakers, as he finished his complete-game effort with four strikeouts while allowing seven hits.

Clauss was the big story at the plate for Spring Lake, as he finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

“He’s been on fire lateley,” Sabo said.
Michael Dilingham added two hits and two RBIs, while Sabo also highlighted solid hitting performances from Tyler Nietering and Tony Sabo.

Spring Lake battles Unity Christian at Hope College on Saturday, then squares off against rival Fruitport on Monday in a completion of a suspended game from Tuesday. The game called due to darkness with the score tied at 8-8 in the eighth inning.
