Lakers' softball swept by Rockets

Spring Lake's varsity softball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses at Reeths-Puffer on Wednesday. The host Rockets won the opener, 8-3, then took Game 2, 2-0. Game 1 saw Reeths-Puffer break open a close game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Evie Lorimer had two hits, including a triple, and Micanna Pelkey added an RBI single for the Lakers. In the nightcap, Spring Lake's Sam Weerstra threw an outstanding game, allowing just three hits, but the Lakers' bats couldn't give her any support.

“Puffer scored two runs in the second inning on a two-out, two-run double, and that was the only scoring in the game,” said Spring Lake coach Bill Core, whose team falls to 9-14 on the year. “Sam had maybe her best game of the year. She threw a three-hitter, but two of them were in that second inning.”

Lorimer had a pair of hits for the Lakers, who play a single game at Montague today.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake split a twin bill with Reeths-Puffer on Wednesday, winning 16-10 and losing 7-6. Alycia Holmes went 7-for-7 with six runs scored for the Lakers (13-12 overall). Emily Blahnik was 5-for-7 with five runs scored, and Jerilyn Converse played outstanding behind the plate as the Lakers’ catcher.
