Top-ranked SL golfers continue strong season

The No. 1-ranked Spring Lake boys golf team continued its outstanding season with a pair of Lakes Eight Conference jamboree victories and another invitational win this past weekend. On Friday, the Lakers remained perfect in league jamborees, winning both the Grant and the Tri-County competitions. Henry McGannon and Marcus Fry each shot a 39 while Luke Platz followed wit a 40 and Erik Johnson carded a 41 in the Grant jamboree. Fry then shot a 34, while McGannon followed with a 39, John Vanderlaan with a 40 and David Bonter a 41 in the Tri-County competition.

Spring Lake currently sits at first place in the league standings with 778 points. Ludington is second at 813 points, and Fremont a distant third at 870, with two jamborees remaining.

On Saturday, the Lakers took first place in the Shelby Invitational at Oceana Golf Course, shooting a team score of 308. Chippewa Hills was a distant second, shooting a 336.

Vanderlaan eagled the opening hole of the event and finished with an 81, tied for ninth best.

McGannon and Bonter tied for second place with rounds of 76, while Fry shot a 77 and Nick Parnell added a 79.

“What I liked about the Grant and Tri-County jamboree is that my 3-4 men didn’t do well on the back, but my 5-6 guys did,” said Lakers’ coach George Bitner.

The Lakers host Muskegon Catholic Central today at Spring Lake Country Club, then will compete in the Lakes Eight Conference jamboree, hosted by Fremont and Newaygo, on Thursday at Briar Hill Golf Course.
