Baseball roundup: Poel, Bucs climb in O-K Red standings

Adam Poel went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs, helping Grand Haven's varsity baseball team knock off O-K Red Conference foe West Ottawa 9-5 on Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled to be played Monday, but was pushed back a day because of rain. Poel also pitched the seventh inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Mike Ginocchio earned the win for the Bucs, allowing eight hits and just one earned run while striking out three batters. Four Grand Haven errors allowed West Ottawa to keep the game close.

The Bucs scored three runs in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth inning to claim an 8-5 lead.

Jeff Stevens doubled while Will VerDuin and Adam Krizan each had a single for the Bucs, who are now 12-10 overall and 7-6 in the league. The Bucs and the Panthers face off again today, and a victory would boost the Bucs into third place in the O-K Red behind league-leaders Rockford (11-2) and Hudsonville (11-2).

LAKERS SWEEP GRANT

Adam Clauss, Brian Chappell and Michael Zietlow were all outstanding on the mound on Tuesday, helping Spring Lake sweep a Lakes Eight Conference doubleheader from Grant.

The Lakers took the first game, 6-3, with Clauss earning the victory, going five innings. He struck out five and allowed six hits. Chappell threw the final two innings, allowing just a single hit.

In Game 2, the Lakers won 8-0 behind Zietlow’s complete-game shutout. He allowed just three hits and struck out five.
