Lakers knock out Bucs in softball doubleheader

The Spring Lake Lakers softball team won both games of Friday's doubleheader against the Grand Haven Buccaneers, but cancer sufferers are the real winners. The teams, dressed in purple uniforms, raised more than $1,000 for research during the "cancer awareness' games by selling t-shirts and taking donations. Each player wore a commemorative purple jersey and played in support of a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who lost their life to the disease.

The games held special meaning for Bucs head coach J.R. Serna. His mom, Mary, suffers from lung cancer.

Spring Lake defeated Grand Haven 8-2 in the first game and held out in extra innings as 7-4 victors in the second duel at Grand Haven High School to take home the annual “Battle of the Bridge” trophy. The Lakers won the inaugural meeting last season.
