Runners kick off summer with a run

Grand Rapids' Victor Ramirez ran a sizzling time of 16 minutes, 6 seconds to win Saturday's Snug Harbor Kick Off to Summer 5K Run. Ramirez, 22, ran a time that was 100 seconds faster than his closest competitor, Spring Lake's Ryan Fedewa, 19, who came across the finish line in 17:44. Third was Grand Haven's Luke Giroux, 19, who clocked a time of 18:03. Grand Haven's Todd Anthes, 41, was fourth at 18:09.

The top female finisher was Dearborn’s Jana Baatenburg, 23, who was 11th overall at 19:07. Second among the female runners was Jenison’s Lara Baatenburg, 23, who came across at 19:51. Spring Lake’s Jentry Soule, 26, was third at 20:17.

A total of 424 runners and walkers took part in the event, which this year for the first time served as the first in a series of races called the Grand Haven 5K Run/Walk Series. The second race in the series will be the Grand Haven High School Patriots Day Run on July 2, and the third and final event is the Coast Guard Run on July 30.
