Baseball roundup: Trojans advance thanks to big comeback

Fruitport's varsity baseball team was close to seeing its season hit the skids during the Trojans' Division 2 pre-district contest against host Coopersville on Tuesday. A back-and-forth game swayed heavily toward the Broncos in the sixth inning, as they scored four runs to take a presumed insurmountable 10-5 lead. The only thing assured, however, was Fruitport wasn't ready to fold.

The Trojans put together an inspired rally in their last at-bats in the seventh inning, totaling three doubles and two singles, as well as two walks and a hit batter in a six-run frame to jolt the Broncos.

Mike Ryan then shut Coopersville down in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure a wild win for the Trojans, 11-10.

“This was the most runs we have scored in one inning all year long,” Fruitport coach Paul Masko said. “My players picked the perfect time to do it.”

Fruitport (16-11 overall) advances to Saturday’s district semifinals at Spring Lake, where it will face Orchard View.

Lance Gilbert had a three-run double during the comeback, while Kyle Vandygriff also had a key hit, plating a pair with a double to left-center. A sacrifice fly by Cody Merkins scored Kody Schultz for the go-ahead run.

Schultz led the Trojans with three hits, while Vandygriff, Merkins and John Sullivan totaled two hits apiece.

Grand Haven jumped out to a 9-0 lead, then had to hold on for a 13-11 baseball victory over Mona Shores on Tuesday.

Jeff Stevens had three hits and an RBI while Danny Cotter added a pair of doubles for the Bucs. Tommy Zelenka doubled, walked, was hit by a pitch and drove in three runs, while Cody Sutton added an RBI single.

The Bucs threw six different pitchers, with Zelenka earning the victory as he allowed one run on one it in one inning of action.

Cotter picked up the save by getting the game’s final two outs.

“Every Buccaneer saw significant playing time in the field and at the plate,” said coach Morey Wagenmaker, whose team now turns its attention to Saturday’s Division 1 district tournament. The Bucs take on Muskegon at 10 a.m. at Mona Shores.
