Golf outings to be held in memory of GHHS athletes

A pair of golf outings later this month will honor the memory of two Grand Haven High School student-athletes who passed away at a young age. On June 20, Grand Haven Golf Club will host the annual Kyle Moreland "Make a Memory' Family and Friends Golf Tournament. The event is held in memory of the 14 year-old son of Steve and Sandy Moreland of Grand Haven, who passed away in May of 2004 due to a heart condition. The entry fee for the 18-hole, two-person alternate shot scramble is $80 per golfer, with a special clergy fee of $65.

Breakfast begins at 7 a.m., followed by an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

All proceeds from the event benefit First Priority of the Lakeshore, a Christian Campus Club mininstry.

On June 25, West Ottawa Golf Course will host the Alex Crum Memorial Golf Outing, which will strive to bring awareness of Factor V Leiden, a blood clotting disorder.

Crum passed away as a 15 year-old sophomore at GHHS in 2007 when a blood clot broke loose in her leg and traveled to her lungs. Upon her death, it was found that she was a carrier of the Factor V gene, increasing her risk of blood clots.

Crum was active in soccer, golf and the ski club at Grand Haven.
