Lakeshore Cougars open season with road win

The Lakeshore Cougars semi-pro football team opened up its 2011 schedule with a 29-18 road victory against the Traverse City Wolves on Saturday. Head coach Deirreio Duncan said the long road trip plus the hot weather plagued the Cougars early on in the Great Midwest Football League contest. "We did not click during the first half (offensively), but after the bus lag was over, we took care of business,' he said.

Special teams provided a lift for the Cougars early on as receiver Brant Brooks, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound receiver from Muskegon, got Lakeshore on the board with a punt return for a touchdown.

Lakeshore’s struggles offensively led to a pair of safeties for the Wolves, their only points through the first three quarters.

The Cougars’ run game came to life in the third with Mike Swanigan and Maurice Sherill finding the end zone, increasing Lakeshore’s lead to 22-8.

Monta Swanigan added a receiving touchdown in the fourth for the Cougars’ final score.

Duncan credited linebackers Stephon Betts, and Joe Morse and rookie Marcus Richards for leading a strong defensive effort.

Lakeshore returns to action on Saturday, as it travels to Kalamazoo to battle the West Michigan Tigers.
