SL Heritage Festival 5K all about inspiration

Todd and Diane Losee have plenty of experience putting on running events through their company, Inspirational Racing. The Spring Lake couple already organize the Coast Guard Park Trail Run and the Octoberfest marathon and half marathon. Add the Heritage Festival 5K run and walk to that list. The run takes place Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. on North Fruitport Road, next to Central Park in Spring Lake.

“When Brian (Fett) originally set this up, he and I had a lot of conversations, and more than anything, Brian wanted the money to go to the children’s units at North Ottawa (Community Hospital),” Todd Losee said. “With Inspirational Racing, everything we do, all the proceeds always go to the Faith Marie Losee Fund at the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.”

The Faith Marie Losee fund, named for Todd and Diane’s daughter, who was stillborn in 2006 because of an issue with her umbilical cord.

Todd Losee said those who have run in past Heritage Festival 5K’s won’t notice many differences in this year’s event.

“I’m just making sure I don’t put a new face on the run, because it’s been very successful,” he said. “We just want to make sure we’re maintaining the integrity that Brian put into the race. With Inspirational Racing, we’ve always tried to do custom medals, age group awards and really nice shirts. We’ve integrated a lot of that stuff into what’s already happening.

“More than anything, we’re making sure we’re maintaining a quality race.”

Last year’s run was the largest Heritage Festival 5K, according to Losee, with just over 300 people participating. With over 250 runners already registered for Saturday’s race and nice weather in the forecast, Losee wouldn’t be surprised to approach 400 runners this year.

Those wishing to run in the event can visit for general information, a race map, and an online entry form.

Following the 5K event, a free 1/3 mile kids’ fun run will take place.

Good luck to the Losee's and a big thank you to Brian Fett for starting this 5k and all of your hard work these past years!
