VanderWerp, Goers come up short at GH tourney

Over the past four years, the local pair of Pete Goers and Stevo VanderWerp have welcomed, then defeated, all challengers on various Midwest beach volleyball tours. Their run came to an end on Saturday as the California duo of Evan Engle and Adam Roberts of Hermosa Beach scored a 21-14, 21-19 win in the pro division championship of the Midwest Beach Volleyball Tour event at Grand Haven.

“We just made too many errors and they didn’t,” said VanderWerp, who actually played alongside Engle and won the pro division title at the MBVT’s first Grand Haven stop earlier this summer. “I’m glad to see that our tour is drawing this kind of competition as it only makes us better.”

A local women’s team also made the pro division finals, where Lori Armstrong and Sara Lieber fell short to Kathryn Babcock and Sheila Shaw, 21-14, 21-15.

Tour organizer Scott VanderWerp was thrilled to have over 100 teams participate on a sunny day at the beach.

“We had local high school kids and kids from colleges like Michigan State, GVSU, Oakland University, Notre Dame, Lewis and Aquinas College, just to name a few. It’s great to see the growth of the sport happen right here on our beautiful beaches.”

Scott VanderWerp noted that five USA Beach National Team members competed in the event.

“We really feel we are starting to let the Californians know that there is a high level of volleyball going on right here on our beaches.”

The MBVT visits Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon on July 16-17, then is back in Grand Haven July 23 before its season-ending tournament at Pere Marquette Beach on Aug. 6-7.

Other division winners on Saturday were:

• Women’s AA: Hildreth/Iaquaniello

• Women’s A: Curtis/Nevelle

• Men’s AA: Palowski/Nordhof

• Men’s A: Rumsey/Barrus

• Men’s B: Maike/Westebeke
