Cougars' game on Saturday cancelled due to forfeit

The Lakeshore Cougars semi-pro football team ideally didn't want to secure their 10th win of the season without stepping onto the field, but an opponents' decision on Thursday forced the scenario. Due to the Northwest Illinois Wildkatz forfeit of Saturday's regular season finale at Buccaneer Stadium in Grand Haven, the Cougars will wrap up their season with an undefeated 10-0 record in the Great Midwest Football League.

The win via forfeit also clinches a first-round home playoff game in the GMFL, with an opponent to be determined after this weekend’s games are completed.

“It’s a beautiful thing,” said Cougars’ co-founder and head coach Deirreio Duncan. “That’s been our goal; to get another home game.”

The Cougars will be likely a No. 2 seed in the playoffs, unless the Metro Detroit Wolverines are upset in their final game on Saturday. The unbeaten Wolverines hold a tie-breaker in the playoff seedings due to allowing fewer points this season.

Duncan said he was eager to play on Saturday because several key players who were forced to miss action due to injury were expected to be back at full strength, including defensive lineman Rich Evans and Rob Brown – both Muskegon natives.

“If we continue to play good defense, we’ll be alright,” Duncan said. “People don’t realize that each week, we’ve been playing with new starters. But we’ve got so much talent and depth on this team, anyone can step in and we’re not missing a beat.”

The GMFL’s 16-team playoffs begin on Aug. 20 with the wildcard round. The Cougars will host that game at Buccaneer Stadium beginning at 6 p.m. The following weekend will be the division round, with the conference championship games slated for Sept. 10.

The GMFL championship will be played Sept. 17 in Aurora, Ill.
