Fruitport tennis 2nd at own invite

Fruitport's top three singles flights each went unbeaten on the day as the Trojans placed second at their own tennis invitational. Kenowa Hills was first with 18 points, followed by Fruitport with 12, Reeths-Puffer with 10 and Western Michigan Christian with five. The Trojans' John Sullivan went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, as did Nolan Clark at No. 2 and Alex Bowen at No. 3. Blake Hutson was 1-2 at fourth singles for the Trojans.

Points were tougher to come by in the doubles flights for Fruitport. Jacob Churchill and Josh Davis went 1-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Matt Paquin and Ben Stroh also won once and lost twice at No. 3 doubles.

The Trojans’ second doubles team of Jake Paquin and Derek Sircher went 0-3, and the Trojans did not have enough athletes to field a fourth doubles team.

“These guys worked hard, and we’re off to a pretty good start, finishing second despite giving up four doubles,” coach Brad Busscher said.

Busscher is hopeful that more players will come out for the team in the next several days, which would allow the Trojans to field a full team of 12 players.

Spring Lake may have edged Gull Lake in the standings at last season’s Division 3 state finals, but the Blue Devils got the upper hand during Thursday’s Allegan Quad, edging the Lakers by five points to take home the title.

Spring Lake was tied for ninth at last season’s finals, while Gull Lake was 11th.

Thursday, Gull Lake finished with 17 points, led by four flight championships — including the top three singles flights. Spring Lake was second with 12 points, with their only champion coming at No. 3 doubles — the team of Brenden Peel and Josh Cole.

Rounding out the field was the host Tigers in third place with 11 points, and Lowell in fourth with eight points.

The Lakers will battle in another quad on Monday, but this time the Lakers will host at Spring Lake High School, beginning at 8 a.m. The Lakers will challenge East Kentwood, Forest Hills Eastern and Petoskey at the event.
