Prep soccer: Spring Lake shuts out WMC in season opener

Spring Lake's varsity soccer team made an early statement in what head coach Jeremy Thelen hopes is the first of many this season. The Lakers posted a shutout on Western Michigan Christian, the defending Division 4 state champions Friday evening in the season opening contest for both squads. The Warriors managed just two shots on goal in their 4-0 setback at Spring Lake Soccer Field.

“I really want to credit our defense. Collectively, they played an outstanding game,” Thelen said, who credited Michael Zietlow, Nic Ellingboe and Erik Lukkari for sparking the shutout.

Alec Strahl opened the scoring for the Lakers in the first half, scoring on a backside run. Riley Kammeraad then found the back of the net to make it 2-0 at the half.

Kammeraad scored what Thelen called a “back-breaker” early in the second half, beating the WMC defense on a breakaway with just 13 seconds elapsed off the clock.

Adam Roberge knocked in the Lakers’ final score, as WMC failed to mark him on the backside, following a long Spring Lake throw-in.

“I’m excited about the prospects of this team,” Thelen said. “It all boils down to our work ethic, though. If we continue to show effort, good things can happen.”

Harry Kriger was the winning goalie for Spring Lake, as he needed to make only one save.

Despite the loss, it was an eventful past few days for the Warriors. WMC scrimmaged a Chicago-area team Thursday morning, attended a Chicago Fire Major League Soccer game later that day, and then volunteered at a Chicago-area agency called Feed My Starving Children Friday morning. The players and thier parents helped pack food which will be distributed worldwide.

“If we would have played well and won the game it would have been a great, great day,” WMC coach David Hulings said.  “However, it was still a blessed day as we did something great as a team.”

Spring Lake is back in action on Tuesday at Mona Shores, while WMC hosts city rival Orchard View.
