Fruitport volleyball picks up where it left off

Fruitport's varsity volleyball team started its new season on Saturday the same way it ended last year - with a championship. The Trojans, the defending Class B state champions, turned in an impressive showing at Grand Haven's 14-team Lakeshore Classic by rolling to the tournament title. The Trojans finished 6-0 during the day, inclduing a 25-20, 25-16 victory over the host Buccaneers in the championship match.

“I saw really good leadership from our seniors and letter winners,” Fruitport coach Nicole Bayle said. “Our serving and passing was really what kept us alive. There was a huge improvement from our new middles, Autumn Winger and Rachael Folkmier. They really have been working hard to improve and it showed (Saturday).”

In the finals, Bayle said the Trojans had a plan in tact to combat the skills of Bucs’ talented 6-foot-5 junior Abby Cole.

“Abby is a great player,” Bayle said. “Our plan was to keep the ball away from her and force them out of their rhythm. We wanted our kids to know that she is going to get her kills and we just had to weather the storm when she is in the front row.”
