Prep roundup: SL golfers widen gap in Lakes 8 standings

Spring Lake's golfers tightened their stranglehold on the Lakes Eight Conference race with a victory at the Fruitport Jamboree, played at Oakridge Golf Club. The Lakers shot a 189, followed by Ludington at 214, Tri-County at 215, Fruitport at 231 and Fremont at 254. Spring Lake now has a 137-stroke lead over Ludington in the league race, which was supposed to have wrapped up on Wednesday. However, Lakers' coach George Bitner said Tuesday's Tri-County Invitational will now also count in league standings.

Elinor Adams and Karissa Raschke each shot a 46 for Spring Lake. Tori Kihnke added a 48, while Ellie Holman added and Ginny Olszewski each shot a 49 and Chezney Peel carded a 50.

Carly Hoekenga and Kaylee McWilliams were the low scorers for Fruitport.

GH TENNIS FALLS TO 'CATS

On a cool, windy evening, Grand Haven’s boys tennis team battled Jenison to the end before coming up short in a 5-3 loss to the Wildcats.

Jenison won all four singles flights. Grand Haven attempted to sweep the doubles, winning at 1, 2 and 4, but came up just short at third doubles.

The Bucs’ Cam Rickard and Isaac Bowen scored a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at No. 1 doubles. Janno Heins and Ryan Peterson won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, while George Austin and Adam Carlisle won in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.

The closest singles match was at No. 1, where Connor Kelley fell to Jenison’s B.J. Schutte, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

Grand Haven will compete in the Holland Christian Tournament on Saturday.

TROJANS BLANKED BY N. MUSKEGON

Fruitport coach Brad Busscher said his team played tough against North Muskegon on Wednesday, but the Trojans came up short in every flight, losing 8-0.

“We went to three sets at 1, 2 and 4 singles, and we were close in doubles as well,” Busscher said.

The Trojans take on Muskegon Catholic next Tuesday.
