Volleyball roundup: Trojans, Bucs struggle at Fruitport Invite

Both Fruitport and Grand Haven struggled at Saturday's Fruitport Invitational volleyball touranment. The Trojans failed to repeat their championship run a year ago at their home tourney and finished with a disappointing 1-3 record. East Grand Rapids was crowned champions, beating Traverse City West in the finals. Fruitport's lone victory was a 25-16, 25-9 win over Ravenna. Senior setter Lauren Hazekamp led the Trojans in both assists (84) and kills (25), while also recording 37 digs, five aces and two blocks. Defensive specialst Lindsay

Armstrong had team-highs in digs (56) and aces (6), while senior Rachael Folkmier led with five blocks and also added 17 kills for the Trojans (17-5 overall).

The Buccaneers finished 2-2 on the day, scoring wins over Forest Hills Northern and Fremontand losing to Whitehall and Divine Child.

Abby Cole finished with 35 kills, 18 blocks and seven aces for the Bucs. Megan Newhouse added 28 kills, three blocks and 18 digs, while Taylor Craymer had 11 kills and four blocks.

Kristen Reenders had six aces and 31 digs, while Jami Hogeboom had 74 assists.

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven placed second at Saturday’s East Grand Rapids Invitational.
