Cross country roundup: Lakers win Gold at Sparta

Spring Lake's varsity girls cross country squad captured first place in the Gold Division (Division 2 teams) at Saturday's Sparta Invitational, sparked by five runners placing 15th or better. "We came into the meet knowing there were a handful of the top teams in the state and we wanted to use it as a measuring stick to continue building from,' said Spring Lake coach Aaron Andres. "Our conference and regional assignments are going to be challenging this season and races like today help us become better runners.'

Spring Lake’s boys showed improvement at Saturday’s Sparta Invitational, and helped the Lakers place eighth overall.

BUCS SHINE IN LOADED FIELD
Although Grand Haven’s girls cross country team wasn’t able to repeat its title at the Michigan State University Spartan Invitational on Saturday, the Bucs proved they remain one of the top teams in the state, as they placed third out of 40 teams.

Saline took home the title at the event with 159 points, while Grosse Pointe South was second with 179 and the Bucs tallied 183. Eight of the top 10 teams in Division 1 competed at the meet, along with the top-ranked squads in Division 2 and 3.

GH BOYS PLACE 18TH
Grand Haven coach John Tarr believes his squad is right on pace with last season’s state qualifying group. His evidence is the Bucs’ result from Saturday’s Spartan Invitational, where they finished 18th out of 36 teams in the Nike Elite race.
