College Showcase: Foster scores game-winner for Alma; WMU kicker Potter honored again

Senior Eric Foster, a forward on the Alma College men's soccer team, scored the game-winning goal in a double overtime thriller against Bluffton (Ohio) on Friday. The unassisted goal gave the Scots a 3-2 victory and was Foster's first score of the season. The Spring Lake graduate has recorded a total of four shots in four games played this season. Alma couldn't carry the momentum into its next contest, as it was shutout by Manchester (Ind.) College, 1-0. The Scots season record stands at 3-3 overall.

For the second consecutive week, Grand Haven native John Potter as earned Mid-American Conference West Division Special Teams player of the week honors.

Potter, a senior at Western Michigan University, accounted for 14 points in a 44-14 win over rival Central Michigan on Saturday. Potter kicked five extra points and matched a career high with three field goals (from 33, 43 and 43 yards).

Potter moved into second place on the Western Michigan’s career list for points by a kicker (252) and into fourth on the career points list.

Potter also extended his WMU record consecutive PATs made streak to 83. He had a season-best ninke kickoffs, with four touchbacks.


Fruitport graduate Danie Brink is entering her third season as the starting setter for the Saint Mary’s College women’s volleyball team.

Brink has tallied 230 assists (7.67 per game), as well as 71 digs for the Belles, who have struggled out of the gate with a 2-6 record.

Saint Mary’s most impressive showing came on Sept. 10, when it swept host Olivet College, 3-0, in a MIAA league match. Brink had a match-high 26 assists in the victory. 


Nate Bruinsma, a Western Michigan Christian graduate, is making steady contributions for the Western Illinois men’s soccer team.

During Saturday’s 4-0 shutout victory over DePaul, Bruinsma, a junior forward, scored his first goal of the season. The win improved the Leathernecks’ record to 3-3-1.

Bruinsma has started in five of the Western Illinois’ seven games this season and has tallied 12 shots.

Bruinsma returns to Michigan on Sunday, as Western Illinois battles at Western Michigan University in a 3 p.m. contest.


The women’s cross country team at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., is currently ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division 3, according to a poll released by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.

A top runner on the Pioneers’ squad is Grand Haven graduate Emily Thomas. At the Lewis and Clark-hosted Pio Open on Sept. 10, Thomas, a junior finished third overall during the 6K race, crossing the finish line in 22:29.

Lewis and Clark easily won the five-team meet, beating runner-up Concordia (Ore.) by a 24-58 margin.
