Prep volleyball: Fruitport, Spring Lake on top in league race

Spring Lake remained in second-place in the Lakes Eight Conference behind leading Fruitport following the Lakers' four-game victory over rival Fremont on Tuesday. Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis said improved defensive play led the Lakers to the 25-18, 25-10, 20-25, 25-15 victory.

“(Kathyrn) Rumptz, our libero, and (Shelbie) Robinson and (Erin) Vargo both middle hitters, had one of their best defensive games for the Lakers,” said Bulthuis, whose squad is now 14-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. “I liked the way we served aggressively and our passing and digging was very consistent throughout the match. We also had several blocks. These are improvements that I have been waiting to see.”
