Bucs' equestrian team off to strong start

Grand Haven's varsity equestrian team kicked off its season by placing second in a pair of meets at Ludington this past weekend. The Buccaneers placed second behind Spring Lake, 125-117, in their opening meet. The following day, Grand Haven took second behind Manistee, 139-117. Grand Haven trails Manistee by seven points going into the final district meet.

The Bucs’ Kaitlin Brace had six wins in the two-day event, including one in Showmanship, two in Western Equitation, two in Western Riding Pattern and one in Trail.
Claire Tillman added five wins — one each in Showmanship, Saddle Seat Equitation, Saddle Seat Bareback, Saddle Seat Pattern and Hunt Seat Bareback.
Stephanie Szymas recorded four wins — three in Showmanship and one in Western Bareback. Szymas was also the high point rider, earning an average of seven points per slot.

Riders Megan Yasick and Courtne Stuk also contributed 234 points to the team total.

The final district meet will take place this coming Saturday at the West Michigan Fairgrounds in Ludington.
