SL tennis scores 4 points at state finals

Spring Lake scored four points at the opening day of the Division 3 tennis state finals, held at Holly and Gland Blanc High Schools. Detroit Country Day and St. Joseph are tied for the lead with 21 points apiece, while the Lakers sit in 14th. "On a whole, everyone played very well,' said Spring Lake coach Charlie Bassett. "All day we had to deal with rain and played inside for most of our matches.'

The Lakers’ top two singles flights each picked up points, as Ryan Fedewa defeated Bogdan Mosincat from Trenton, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, but fell to Klaas Walhout from Grand Rapids Christian in the second round, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Spring Lake’s Gabriel Guzman breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Croswell-Lexington in Round 1, but fell to the fourth-seed from East Grand Rapids in the next round, 6-0, 6-0.
