Lakers move on, Trojans fall in soccer district play

Spring Lake had little trouble in its opening game of the Division 2 district tournament on Monday, as the host Lakers routed Coopersville 8-0.

Seven different Lakers scored goals in the victory. Spring Lake had a 7-0 lead at the half, then notched No. 8 five minutes into the second half to end the contest due to the mercy rule.

The Lakers, ranked No. 2 in the latest Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association poll, will face Cedar Springs on Wednesday at Cedar Springs. Game time is 7 p.m.

Cedar Springs knocked off Fruitport in Monday’s opening round of district play, 2-0.

The loss marks the disappointing close to a very successful season in which the Trojans finished with a 12-6-1 record.
