Well, the math doesn’t immediately make sense, but that’s exactly what happened to the Grand Haven girls cross country team.

The Buccaneers entered Thursday’s O-K Red Conference meet in second place in the league standings, then finished second at the conference meet, and somehow earned a first-place finish in the final league standings.

“I think I have now seen it all,” said Buccaneers’ coach Greg Russick following Thursday’s meet at Johnson Park.
Rockford, which was third heading into the conference meet, took first at Thursday’s race with 46 points. Grand Haven maintained its second-place position with 52 points, and Hudsonville, the regular-season champs, placed third with 72 points.

That left all three teams with a share of the league title.
