Youth coach has the 'Wright' stuff

When Bob Wright finds time in his hectic schedule to check out a Grand Haven or Spring Lake varsity soccer game, the memories come flooding back.

Most of the current Buccaneer and Laker seniors who have led their teams to respective top 10 state rankings got their start in soccer playing for Wright in the Tri-Cities Strikers organization.

“I picked up a team when they were, well, I can’t remember if it was U11 or U12 — and we stayed together until U16,” Wright said. “We were the first Strikers team to go premier. I was trying to count and I think nine or 10 of the boys on the Grand Haven team were on that team, and probably about that many from Spring Lake.”

Both the Lakers and the Buccaneers will play for district championships today — with Grand Haven hosting West Ottawa at 1 p.m. and Spring Lake meeting Reeths-Puffer at Cedar Springs at 2.
