The Lakers played well below their ability level, yet still managed to score a thrilling shootout victory over Reeths-Puffer to claim the Division 2 district championship.

“It was a pretty emotional game back and forth, and we knew at this point, nothing’s going to come easy,” said Thelen, whose team is ranked No. 2 in the state and has tied a school record with its 20th win. “We won a game where we didn’t play great. Now we have to step up our play.”

The Lakers will need a better showing on Wednesday as they meet No. 1-ranked DeWitt at 6 p.m. at Grand Rapids Christian.
