Trojans can't dethrone defending state champs

Fruitport served a wake-up call to the five-time defending Division 3 state champions from East Grand Rapids on Friday, socking the host Pioneers with 21 first-half points and trailing by just seven points at the half.

But the Trojans couldn’t match offensive firepower with East Grand Rapids and fell in the first-round of the Division 3 playoffs, 49-28.

The loss ends Fruitport’s season at 7-3 overall, while East Grand Rapids improves to the same record.

Zack Goldman led the Trojans’ ground attack with 119 yards on just seven carries, while Reyes also reached triple digits with 100 yards on 12 carries.

Matt Schucker totaled 14 tackles to pace the Trojans defense, while the outstanding senior Reyes had 10 from his safety position.
