Buccaneers claim Division 1 regional crown

Sophomore Jon Buitenhuis' goal early in the first overtime session gave Grand Haven a thrilling 3-2 win over Forest Hills Central in the Division 1 regional championship game on Saturday at Grand Rapids Christian High School. The Buccaneers trailed 1-0 at the half, then took a 2-1 lead into the closing minutes before FHC scored to tie the game at 2-2 with under two minutes remaining in regulation.

Buitenhuis, who spent the season on the junior varsity team, had only been in the game for a few moments before his game-winning score. Teammate Andrew Byrne sent a long pass in to Buitenhuis, who was waiting at the back post. His header eluded FHC goalie Kevin McCoy and found the back of the net, propelling the Buccaneers into Wednesday's Division 1 state semifinals.

That contest will be against Troy at Holt High School.
