WMC volleyball comes up short in district final

It was really close again, but North Muskegon defeated Western Michigan Christian for the third time this year Thursday night, sending the Warriors to the sidelines of the Class C District Volleyball Tournament at Montague.

The Lady Warriors easily won the first set, 25-12 and tied the second set, 24-24 before losing 26-24. There were several ties in the third set, but the Warriors kept battling and pulled out a 28-26 win.

The fourth set was tied at 23-23 with the Norsemen ending up winning 25-23.

The fifth and final set was tied at 2-2 before North Muskegon raced out to an 8-4 lead in the deciding game to 15.

The Lady Warriors came back and trailed only 9-8 before the Norse went on a run and won 15-11.

”We played a great game tonight,” WMC coach Bret Noordhof said. “It was a hard-fought battle verses a good team. We just came up a little short in the end. The girls should be very proud of the season they had.”

Rachel Bruinsma capped off a fantastic season with another strong showing as she registered 28 kills, five blocks and 11 digs.

Elyse Ray added 14 kills to go with eight blocks and three aces, while Vanessa Eekhoff had eight kills, four blocks and five aces.

Setter Julie Merz provided 45 assists for the Warriors, while Ashley Ott added 23 digs and three aces.
