Instead, it was the Trojans who flexed their muscle in Thursday’s Class B district championship match as Fruitport scored a convincing four-game victory over the host Vikings of Whitehall. The Trojans won, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16.
“We knew we had a challenge, and we came in and played Fruitport volleyball,” said Trojans junior Brandie Jones, who finished with 10 kills and 15 digs. “We knew Hope (Rillema) and Autumn (Christienson) are good players. We scouted them a lot, and we knew what we had to do against them. We basically just tried to block them off the court.”
Rillema and Christienson — both juniors who have already committed to play volleyball on the collegiate level — finished with 12 and eight kills, respectively.
The pair were no match for the Trojans’ depth. Fruitport saw four different players record at least seven kills, led by Bre Geile with 19. Rachel Folkmier and Lauren Hazekamp each had seven kills for the No. 2-ranked Trojans, who advance to the Class B regional tournament at Stanton Central Montcalm next Tuesday.
