Area soccer teams fall in state title games

Last fall, teams from Michigan's west side won all four soccer state championships. That trend was reversed today as all four state titles went to teams from the Detroit area - at the expense of four West Michigan squads.

In Division 1, Canton scored a goal with 3 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the game to pull out a 1-0 win over Grand Haven at East Kentwood's Pat Patterson Field.

Also in East Kentwood, Allen Park Inter-City Baptist scored a goal with just 65 seconds remaining in overtime to edge Western Michigan Christian, 1-0, to claim the Division 4 state title

In Troy, the Lakers of Spring Lake couldn't make a 1-0 halftime lead stand as they came up short, 2-1, at the hands of Auburn Hills Avondale in the Division 2 title game.

Detroit Country Day handed Hudsonville Unity Christian a 2-1 its first loss of the year in the Division 3 championship game at Troy.
