1. The Buccaneers were senior-laden last year. Who do they have returning?

The most notable returner for the Bucs is senior wing Alex Eidson, who led the team in scoring as a junior at nearly 14 points per game. Eidson is a deadly 3-point shooter who showed improved moves to the basket as the season went on. He had a fantastic fall on the Grand Haven varsity football team, earning first-team all O-K Red Conference honors as a kicker. Eidson was also fantastic as a wide receiver until a separated shoulder ended his season. He’s still recovering from that shoulder injury but should be close to full strength when the season tips off tonight. Others who contributed off the bench a year ago include Jeremy Lattig, Danny Cotter, Matt Kroll, Brent Boerma and Mac Carter.

2. Who are some newcomers who could make their mark this winter?

Sean Steffel, a junior, could work his way into a starting spot at the point guard position for Grand Haven. He’s a solid outside shooter who can also use his quickness to get to the basket. Ethan Groothuis is a strong shooter while Kevin LaCroix, despite standing just 5-11, is a relentless rebounder who could be a game-changer because of his effort and determination. Mackenzie Carter was pulled up to the varsity squad late in his sophomore season and contributed immediately. He could be a physical presence that the Buccaneers are looking for as they lack true post players.

3. With so many newcomers to the party, can Grand Haven come close to last season’s total of 14 victories?

Playing against a difficult schedule with a very young, inexperienced team, coach Steve Hewitt would be thrilled to get 14 wins out of this team. A .500 record looks to be an attainable goal, and anything beyond that would be icing on the cake for this team.
