Maroons' 11 3-pointers sink Bucs

Grand Haven varsity boys basketball coach Steve Hewitt saw plenty of positives in his team's season-opener at Holland Christian on Tuesday.

One thing the Buccaneers didn’t do well was defend the perimeter.

The host Maroons knocked down 11 3-pointers, paving the way for a 53-51 win over the Buccaneers at the Holland Civic Center.

“That’s the story,” said Hewitt, whose team falls to 0-1 on the year. “You’re not going to win many games giving up 11 3-point baskets. The bottom line is, we have to defend the perimeter better. No excuse for that.”

The Bucs battled back and had a shot to win it at the end, but Alex Eidson’s 3-pointer at the buzzer didn’t fall.

Eidson had a strong game on the offensive end, finishing with a game-high 20 points. T.J. VanWieren added 11 for the Bucs, making all four of his shots from the floor and all three of his free throw attempts.

Danny Cotter had eight points and Sean Steffel scored seven.
