The Lakers scored wins against Wyoming Rogers and Greenville’s ‘B’ squad. They were edged by Jenison, 48-34; suffered a tough one-point loss to Caledonia, 37-36; and were beaten handidly by the host Yellow Jackets, 60-18.
Overall, Spring Lake had five wrestlers finish with 4-1 records, including George Nietering, Tyler Nietering, Harry Kriger, Andrew Hissom, and Billy Belcher.
“I thought we had some guys wrestle really well individually this weekend,” Spring Lake coach Dan Robinson said. “We just need to shore up our weights and get guys where they need to be.”
The Lakers (3-4 overall) return to the mat on Wednesday for their home-opener. Spring Lake will host a quad that also features Holland, Grant and Shelby.
GORDON LEADS TROJANS AT LANSING EASTERN
Dakota Gordon led the charge for the Fruitport wrestling team at the Lansing Eastern Invitational on Saturday.
The 152-pound junior pinned a state-ranked opponent and eventually reached the finals before falling to No.-1 ranked Travis Curley of St. Johns to finish second.
Other Trojans who turned in strong performances included Kaeleb Evans, who placed third at 125; David VanBergen was dealt a 10-7 loss by Grand Haven’s Allen Torres in the semifinals, but rebounded with a third-place finish; Tommy Martinez and Collin Butler each placed fourth; and senior Tyler Pastor reached the semifinals at 119, but broke his hand and finished sixth.
Fruitport hosts Wyoming Lee, Mona Shores and Kelloggsville in a quad on Wednesday.
