Area cheer teams open season at L.C. Walker Arena

A total of 13 varsity competitive cheer teams invaded L.C. Walker in Arena on Tuesday for the Mona Shores Sailor Invitational - the opening competition for many teams in the area. The competition was split among three divisions, with Grand Haven battling against East Kentwood, Jenison and the host Sailors in Division 1, and Spring Lake and Fruitport squaring off against four other schools in Division 2.

East Kentwood was the runaway champion of the evening, totaling 769 points, and beating runner-up Jenison by 62. Mona Shores was third with 690, while the Bucs accumulated 469 points.

Teams are scored on three different rounds, with each round being judged on different criteria.

In Division 2, Holland Christian scored high on its tumbling and tosses and jumps in the third round to win the title with 709 points. Fruitport was fifth in the division with 581 points and Spring Lake was sixth with 542.

“We improved on our scores and we know where we need to improve before our next competition on January 7 at Cedar Springs,” said Spring Lake coach Katie Bowen.
