The victory came in the opening round of the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame Girls Basketball Classic at Mona Shores.

With the win, Fruitport advances to Thursday’s final against the host Sailors, who beat Muskegon on Tuesday, 54-41.

Fruitport managed just five first-quarter points, but still managed to lead 5-2 after eight minutes of play. The Trojans upped their advantage to 15-10 at halftime, then pulled away thanks to a big third quarter.

“We’ll take an ugly win, but the team knows we have to start playing better,” Trojans coach Bob German said.

Laufersky finished with a game-high eight points. Lauren Hazekamp and Amber Carmean also scored eight points for Fruitport. Hazekamp added 11 rebound and five steals, while Toni Parker grabbed seven boards.

Fruitport’s boys play tonight at Comstock Park, while the Grand Haven girls basketball team is in action Friday against Detroit Martin Luther King at a showcase tournament hosted by Detroit Country Day.
