Mona Shores routs Fruitport in Classic finals

Fruitport's bread and butter is creating scoring opportunities off its full- court pressure defense. Mona Shores had no trouble solving that on Thursday, and the Sailors didn't have many problems handling the Trojans' half-court defense, either. The host Sailors dominated the rebounding edge and held the Trojans to just seven made field goals in a 52-22 result in the finals of the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame Girls Basketball Classic. In the consolation game of the event, Muskegon defeated Reeths-Puffer, 58-47.

The Sailors took a 12-4 lead after one quarter, then blew the contest wide open by outscoring Fruitport 22-3 in the second. Sailors’ sophomore Jasmyn Thomas hurt the Trojans with her aggressiveness on the offensive glass, helping her finish with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Brigid Kiley added 14 points and eight rebounds for Mona Shores (3-2 overall), which finished with 21 steals against the Trojans.

Fruitport guard Lauren Hazekamp was held in check with just two points — nearly 13 points less than her season average. Rachael Folkmier and Debbie Pekel each scored four points off the bench to lead the Trojans, which falls to 5-2 overall this season.
