Bucs icers light lamp 11 times in victory

Austin Way and Tom Zelenka each recorded a hat trick as the Grand Haven varsity hockey team exploded offensively in an 11-4 win over Hudsonville on Wednesday.

Will VerDuin, Doug Zelenka, Jake Steggles, James Dyksterhouse and Patrick Ferris also scored for the Bucs, who scored 11 goals on 41 shots.

Way scored all three of his goals in the opening period, helping the Bucs claim a 5-2 lead.

Kollen Bayko scored twice in the second for Hudsonville, which clawed its way back to within two goals at 6-4 before the Bucs’ Steggles and Tom Zelenka added goals late in the second period.

Bucs’ goalie Mark Nalley made 19 saves on 24 shots while Eagles’ goalie Luke Lamfers stopped 30 of the 41 shots he faced.

The Bucs return to the ice on Friday for the Stan Conrad Invitational at Lakeshore Sports Center. Grand Haven takes on Portage Central at 6 p.m. Friday, then could face rival Mona Shores on Saturday, depending on the outcome of Friday’s contests.
