Rabideau was recently named the head coach of the West side in the Michigan High School All Star football game, which will take place June 30 at Kelly-Shorts Stadium on the campus of Central Michigan University.

The game features 88 of the best high school players in the state, as selected by a state-wide group of Michigan High School Football Coaches Association member coaches.

That group also votes on coaches to lead the teams, and this year, Rabideau’s name was at the top of the list for the West side. Grand Haven’s Mike Farley will serve as an assistant coach on Rabideau’s staff, as will Farley’s brother, Scott.

“This is a heck of an honor,” Rabideau said. “I was shocked, surprised and honored, all at the same time. I found out about it this past summer at our summer coach’s meeting, The guys came out of the vote and told me, and it’s just pretty cool.”

Mike Giannone of Macomb Dakota will coach the East team.

“Mike and Jerry are extremely respected high school football coaches and represent the sport and the MHSFCA very well,” said Gus Kapolka, the 2011 MHSFCA East-West All Star Game chair.

Giannone has a career record of 120-42, including back-to-back Division 1 state titles in 2006-07. Rabideau has led the Lakers to an 81-49 record in his 13 seasons, including nine playoff appearances and a state runner-up finish in 2000.

Rabideau explained that a committee votes on coaches whose names have been entered in a pool of candidates. The leading vote-getter is named the head coach, with the next several vote-getters taking on assistant roles.

Scott Farley of Leslie, Grand Haven Buccaneers’ Mike Farley, and Jerry VanHavel of Mason will join Rabideau on the West staff. In addition, each coach gets to bring along a coach off their high school staff. Rabideau said he’ll bring defensive coordinator and long-time Laker coach Leo Rosencrants.

The rosters for the game will be announced on Saturday.
