Lakers hand WMC girls 1st loss

Playing in their sixth game in the past two weeks, Spring Lake varsity girls basketball coach Rich Hyde said he didn't know what to expect from his squad during a non-conference showdown at undefeated Western Michigan Christian on Saturday.

Although worried about his team battling on tired legs, Hyde’s squad produced arguably their biggest win of the season and handed the Warriors their first loss, 41-40.

“The Grant win early in the year, which was our defending league champion, was huge, but obvioulsy, to beat an undefeated team that was honorable mention in the state, it’s big,” Hyde said. “It puts us on the map even more.”

Spring Lake (9-1 overall) gained an edge with a tremendous start against WMC, as it built a 12-2 first-quarter lead and extended its advantage to as large as 15 points at 20-5 in the second quarter.

WMC guard Rachel Karsten made things interesting down the stretch. She scored five points in the final 30 seconds to bring the Warriors to within a point.
Her last bucket was a step inside the 3-point line and although the referees signaled it was worth two points, the scorer’s table credited her with three points, putting the scoreboard at an incorrect 41-41.

“I think Jess (Lewakowski) looked up and saw it was tied, and she tried to set something up,” Hyde said.

Instead, WMC stole the inbounds pass and had a chance for a game-winning bucket. But Spring Lake’s Morgan Gagnon blocked the Warriors’ final attempt, and sealed the Lakers’ one-point win.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake defeated WMC, 43-25.

Freshmen: The Lakers pulled away for a 46-16 win over the Warriors.  Amber Taylor had nine points and four rebounds for Spring Lake (7-1) while Ayna Gordon added seven points, five boards and two steals. Emma VanAndel had seven points for WMC.
