Local athletes among finalists for Scholar-Athlete awards

A pair of Spring Lake student-athletes were among the 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's 2011-12 Scholar-Athlete awards.

Lakers’ senior Nick Parnell is a finalist among Class B boys while senior Emily Kendro is a finals in the Class B girls division.

In addition, Grand Haven’s Morgan Hawver is a finalist in the Class A girls.

The top 32 scholar-athletes will be announced at various times throughout the month of February. The award recipients will be honored during halftime of the Class C boys basketball final on March 24 at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.

To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 and have previously won a varsity letter in a sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Students were also asked to respond to a series of short essay questions; submit two letters of recommendation; and write a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in education and athletics.

The awards, underwritten by Farm Bureau Insurarance, include a $1,000 scholarship to each of the 32 recipients.
