TeBeau and his teammates made sure they didn’t experience that same disappointment on Thursday as the Buccaneers cruised past Mona Shores (65-13) and West Ottawa (43-18) to win their 13th Class A district title over the past 14th seasons.
“It feels good to get it back and show that was a fluke,” TeBeau said of his team’s district loss in 2010. “It hurt, losing that year.”
TeBeau’s victory at 130 pounds came at a pivotal time for the Bucs. The Panthers had just trimmed the Bucs’ lead down to 20-15 moments before. Josh Juchartz’s’ pin at 125 pounds pushed the Bucs’ lead to 26-15, then TeBeau looked to be in trouble in his match midway into the second period. Then the Bucs’ senior turned the tables on the Panthers’ Caleb Beall, catching Beall and flipping him onto his back for a pin. That gave the Bucs a 32-15 lead.
“I knew that every match was going to be a big one, and we need all the bonus points we can get,” TeBeau said. “Coach always says you’ve got to be looking for pins, so when I got that reversal, it just felt natural to reach for his head and go for the pin.”
