Despite winning 13 of the last 14 district titles, the Buccaneers have yet to win a regional title, depsite coming close several times.

Grand Haven gets another shot tonight, with an old nemesis standing in its way.

The Buccaneers face Rockford at East Kentwood High School in the opening round of the Division 1 regional tournament tonight at 6 p.m. The winner meets either Caledonia or Hudsonville in the finals later this evening.

Grand Haven’s lone O-K Red loss came at the hands of the No. 8-ranked Rams, 37-23, back on Dec. 21, 2010.

Since that time, the Bucs swept through their league schedule — including a 49-22 win over Hudsonville on Jan. 5 — and thoroughly beat the Rams in the O-K Red tournament, clinching a share of the league title.

Coach James Richardson and his Buccaneers aren’t content with claiming a share of the O-K Red crown and winning another district tournament.

“There are other things we need to accomplish,” Richardson said. “This team has set pretty lofty goals.”

Fruitport will also compete in the regional round tonight as the Trojans travel to Lowell to face Wyoming Rogers. The winner of that showdown will likely get a shot at Lowell, which is ranked No. 2 in Division 2.

Winners of tonight’s regional tournaments advance to the state finals, which take place Feb. 24-25 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
