The Buccaneers’ girls overcame plenty of adversity at Thursday’s Division 1 regional meet at Schuss Mountain in Bellaire and still managed to secure the team’s first-ever berth in the state finals.

“Yesterday was a magical day and one I will never forget,” Warner said after the Bucs placed third at the regional competition.

Traverse City Central won the regional title with 57 points and Traverse City West took second with 78. The Buccaneers were next with 120 points as a team, 26 points ahead of Forest Hills Northern/Eastern. Only the top three teams advance to the state meet.

The Bucs overcame a bad break from their top skier, Brittney Olds, in the slalom. Olds’ ski came off on her first run, so her time did not factor into the team’s scoring.

Scoring for the Bucs in the slalom event were Allison Price, Paige Reierson, Hannah Rymal and Pepper. In the giant slalom, it was Olds, Rymal, Price, Pepper and Reierson whose times contributed to the team score.

Lindy Vallier had a strong performance in the slalom runs, as did Coval in the giant slalom.

The Buccaneers will next compete in the Division 1 state meet, to be held at Nub’s Nob in Harbor Springs on Feb. 27.

BOYS PLACE EIGHTH

Grand Haven’s boys ski team placed eighth at Thursday’s regional meet.

Skiing for the Bucs were Hobie Hagen, Jack Griffin, Greg Page, Lukas Walling, Jack Leitner and Nate Bathke.
