GH wrestling ready for unbeaten Brighton in first-ever quarterfinal

James Richardson invited Brighton to attend the Grand Haven wrestling duals tournament this past December for one reason - because he felt there was a chance his Buccaneers could match up with the Bulldogs in the state tournament.

Richardson’s foresight proved prophetic as this evening, Grand Haven will face off against Brighton in the Division 1 quarterfinals at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

In that match, the Bucs will try to avenge their earlier 10-point loss to the Bulldogs, who boast a perfect 39-0 record and are seeded second in the state tournament.

“They’re a good team, but if our kids perform, I like our matchup,” Richardson said. “They came to our tournament for this reason right here. We thought there was a chance we might see each other in the state tournament.”

The Bucs aren’t too concerned with the fact that they lost that earlier matchup. A week later, Grand Haven lost to Rockford — a loss the Buccaneers avenged in last week’s regional semifinals.

“We proved that last week against Rockford. We have a different team than we had in December,” Richardson said.
