Although her team has been turning in double-digit margin of victories recently, Grand Haven coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer hasn't been completely satisfied with the play of her Buccaneers' varsity girls basketball team.

Friday was a different story, as the Bucs completely dominated host Jenison, 62-29, and in the process, wrapped up the outright title in the O-K Red Conference.

“We talked about coming out and playing with a sense of urgency and getting out and putting the clamps down,” Kowalczyk-Fulmer said, whose squad closes the regular season at 19-1 overall and 13-1 in the O-K Red. “We’ve been kind of dilly-dallying around in our last two games and letting teams hang around. Tonight, it was nice to see us get out of the blocks and put (Jenison) away early.”

Spring Lake’s ferocious defense and a large discrepancy in free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the Lakers’ 52-46 victory at Fremont High School on Friday.

The win puts Spring Lake’s record at 17-3 and 11-3 in the Lakes Eight Conference, heading into Monday’s Class B district showdown at rival Fruitport.

The Lakers got to the free throw line 18 more times than the Packers during the contest (34-16) and made 12 more (23-11). Lakers’ senior Evie Lorimer thrived at getting to the charity stripe, as she connected on 10-of-14 and led her team with 20 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fruitport’s game at Newaygo was postponed to today. The girls game will tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the Trojans’ varsity boys contest against the Lions.
