WMC girls hoops wins district opener

A 19-0 run to start the second half helped propel Western Michigan Christian to a 52-26 win over Montague in the opening round of the Class C district tournament on Monday at Holton.

The Warriors, now 18-3 on the season, move on to face North Muskegon, which drew a bye, in semifinal action Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Holton.

Undefeated Kent City defeated Holton in the second game Monday, 74-38, and moves on to play Ravenna in the second game Wednesday.

The winners will advance to the district final at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

WMC raced out to a 13-5 first quarter lead, led 23-13 at intermission and built a 42-18 advantage after three quarters.

Rayonee Grant scored a game-high 16 points for the Warriors while Rachel Bruinsma and Rachel Karsten also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Vanessa Eekhoff pulled down a dozen rebounds for the Warriors while Bruinsma grabbed seven boards. Senior guard Miya Oakes had seven steals and six assists.
