Boys Basketball: SL closes regular season with a win

Spring Lake's varsity boys basketball team gave Newaygo a proper send-off from the Lakes Eight Conference on Thursday by defeating the Lions, 75-65, in a contest that featured a wild fourth quarter in which a total of 51 points were scored. Newaygo will depart for the Central State Activities Association next season. Spring Lake, which wraps up its regular-season schedule at 11-9 overall and 9-5 in Lakes Eight play, outscored Newaygo 22-12 to take a 19-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Lakers’ forward Logan Pellegrom finished with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists. Erik Johnson had eight points and five rebounds and Adam Clauss dished off four assists.

Spring Lake received a first-round bye in its Class B district tournament at Whitehall. The Lakers will play the winner of Orchard View and Oakridge on Wednesday.


Once again, a slow start and spotty defense were culprits in a close loss for the Grand Haven varsity boys basketball team.

The Buccaneers fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter and could never get back into the lead in a 59-56 loss at Forest Hills Northern.

Grand Haven’s Alex Eidson led all scorers with 24 points. He hit a pair of 3-pointers and was 10-of-14 from the foul line.

Jeremy Lattig scored 10 points for the Bucs and Sean Steffel added nine.

Grand Haven opens Class A district play on Monday against Kenowa Hills (9-11) at Cedar Springs High School. That contest tips off at 5 p.m.

A close game for three quarters got away from Western Michigan Christian Thursday night as Grand Rapids Covenant Christian outscored the Warriors 25-5 in the fourth quarter for a 68-44 win.

The Warriors trailed just 15-12 at the first stop, 27-25 at intermission and 43-39 going into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Chaise Schuiteman, just brought up from the junior varsity team, led the Warriors with nine points while Robert Wilkinson had eight.

WMC opens District Class C tournament action Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Ravenna when they face the winner of Monday’s game between Montague and Holton.


Fruitport Calvary Christian held on to beat Pentwater on Thursday, 60-45.

Patrick Asdell finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Mike Warren added 16 points and 11 boards.

Calvary Christian (17-3) will play Fremont Providence Christian (11-8) on Wednesday in Class D district action at Muskegon Catholic Central.
